Background: here
Personality:
Nezumi suffers from a myriad of issues: anxiety and detachment among some of the few. These issues stem from the fact that Nezumi was ripped from his home in the forest at a young age. The people he loved, the place he grew up, was all burned before his eyes. The scar that left on him was only worsened when he was subsequently taken prisoner to No.6's Correctional Facility. There, he was treated as a criminal and a sin to humanity. His lack of adherence to the "ways things are" in the controlled city of No.6 was dangerous and had to be attended to. It's no surprise that Nezumi grew spiteful, scornful and secluded. Nezumi gave up on the goodness of people and humanity and grew a shell around him. He vowed he would escape and perhaps one day seek his revenge on the people that destroyed his home and caused him so much pain and anguish. No young boy – let alone a human – should ever have to endure such agony. No person could stop him and he vowed to not let anything - even attachment - stop him.
Of course, that dogged sharpness softened, if only a fraction, when he escaped and met Shion one rainy night. Shion’s natural and easy empathy for a complete stranger shocked Nezumi to the core. While Nezumi poked fun at the young Shion for being so caring and dumb for housing a criminal, he remembered him. Shion saved his life for noting in return. Such a selfless act with such a heavy consequence. It made no sense and it did not resonate with the world view Nezumi had painted for himself.
It's years later when they meet again. Nezumi "returns the favor" and saves Shion, unable to handle the fact that he owes anyone anything. That defense doesn’t have too much merit, considering Nezumi used his robotic rats to keep tabs on Shion even prior to that. It's extremely likely that Nezumi was concerned for his only friend’s safety and looked out for him and his safety. Nezumi kept far away - as he does with any situation that could hurt him, expose him, betray him - and waited until he was needed before re-entering the boy’s life. Which says a lot about Nezumi—he’s a loner at heart. He grew to be a scheming and careful mastermind.
At first blush, Nezumi is fast, agile, and extremely quick on his feet. He is well-read and knows the ins and outs of West District likely better than most that have been cast away by No.6. There isn't much that Nezumi doesn't know. He's been well-trained with a gun and likely has killed many more than he's willing to admit. A formidable opponent with a sharp tongue, it isn't hard to see why he has grown to have such a reputation. While he has many connections, he can’t quite say he has any “friends”. He uses people and protects them if it's convenient for him - he likes to think that everything has its utility and that he's above stupid bonds like friendship. But even then, there are glimpses at the soft heart buried deep down - when Nezumi sings, when Nezumi saves those who he cares about, when his temper flares when his "convenient comrades" are in danger.
Despite his rough exterior, Nezumi has shards left of a caring person. It is easier to opt not to show it unless the situation absolutely demands it. While he cares for Shion, he shows it in odd ways. Instead of outright helping Shion, he does things the "hard way". He refuses to baby Shion, but he does manage to teach him hard life lessons and how to live. Nezumi teaches Shion to be a free-thinker, to stop being so obedient to the lies of No.6 and use his own brain. The way he goes about it can be seen as "tough love" and perhaps cruel at times, saying that they'll grow to be "enemies", but it's a lesson Shion must learn. It's a lesson Nezumi had to learn and that might be the kindest thing he's capable of - helping Shion learn from Nezumi's own mistakes.
Nezumi enjoys reading in his free time. His “house” consists on several bookshelves of classics, including Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde. His love of literature transfers over to his love of theatre. Nezumi is a well-known actor in the West Destrict. He is often cast as a female character, given his natural grace and beauty. Surprisingly, Nezumi has no qualms with this casting and performs elegantly. For theater, Nezumi does not mind the role he plays. People often come specifically to the playhouse to see him perform. His stage-name, "Eve", has grown to be quite the wellknown name in the West District. It's likely due to the conviction and passion that Nezumi presents in each and every performance. For someone so "jaded", he has a wonderful grasp on "emotions" in the theater.
In his own life, though, Nezumi keeps everyone at an arm’s length as he tries to survive and plot against No.6. Nezumi doesn’t even name the robotic mice that were his only source of companionship for so long. That is, until Shion somehow softens him up and changes him. Nezumi, whose motto used to be that the moment you let someone in, let someone close to you, you “lost”, changes. Shion becomes, begrudgingly, the most important person in his life and he is determined to ensure his happiness and safety. Nezumi promises Shion’s Mother to keep him safe and he grows to be strangely possessive of his only companion. Of course, he never directly admits that he cares for his friend and insists that they can never be friends given their differences in beliefs. He's extremely loyal once a person has finally entered his heart. He's devoted to his mission in life and refuses to give up, no matter how bleak the circumstances are. While Shion accuses him of seeing only in "black" and "white", he is capable of being extremely realistic when the situation calls for it - possibly even cynically so.
…Deep down, though, Nezumi isn’t the “heartless demon and beast” that everyone thinks he is. He’s just…trying to find his place. He's still an extremely emotionally volatile person that's been hurt and has deep, deep scars. It isn't likely that he'll completely change anytime soon, but at least now he has some sort of purpose, some hope. Whether that has anything to do with the fact that leaves his only friend is still up for debate.
